Description
With biscuits in the image of the Pope appearing in the shop windows and pilgrims roaming around Lisbon, Portugal's capital is hoping for an economic boost from its hosting of the week-long religious festival known as World Youth Day, the world's largest Catholic gathering. Economist João Duque says the Iberian nation is hoping the event will generate "a few hundred million euro", but the final figure will depend on the number of people who come, with organisers expecting one million to attend Pope Francis's closing mass. However, some locals are more cautious, with shopkeeper Edouardo Caris telling AFP that while "the Pope is welcome of course," he believes that "Lisbon won't benefit much from this visit" as the pilgrims tend to bring their necessities with them and won't spend much in the capital.
