Description
Since the beginning of the war in neighbouring Ukraine, the Romanian port of Constanta - Europe's largest for cereals - has been racing to adapt to the influx of Ukrainian grain. In this year's first six months, it registered a traffic of 7.5 million tons of Ukrainian grain compared to 8.7 million tons for all of last year. Moscow's invasion in February 2022 saw Ukraine's Black Sea ports blocked by warships until an agreement -- brokered by the UN and Turkey and signed in July 2022 -- allowed critical grain shipments to restart. Last month, the Kremlin said it was exiting the deal after months of complaining that elements of the agreement allowing the export of Russian food and fertilisers had not been honoured.
