Description
In Ukraine, Russia's invasion triggered a patriotic impulse, but some Ukrainians are refusing to fight despite societal pressures, and warnings from authorities cracking down on draft evaders amid a difficult counter offensive. AFP interviewed three men who chose to go abroad and avoid the frontline. Bogdan Marynenko, whose father is fighting in Ukraine, left the country before he was 18 to be allowed to cross the border. Ivan, who spent a month at the front, paid thousands of dollars to escape illegally when he realised that he couldn't "stand it psychologically". Yevgen Kuruch was supposed to return to Ukraine the day before the war began. As a reserve officer, and the first to be potentially mobilised, he decided to stay in Warsaw.
