Description
With the closure of land routes between Niger and Benin, many people have turned to canoes and motorised boats to cross the River Niger at their peril. Since the coup on 26 July, the bridge linking the Beninese town of Malanville to Gaya in Niger has been blocked by goods trucks. "We're praying that they'll open up here and we'll get through" says a Togolese truck driver, stuck at the border for over a month. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES N°33VP4B2
