Description
An exhibition at Vienna's Schönborn-Batthyány Palace organized by the Wienerroither & Kohlbacher gallery celebrates the 85th birthday of the enfant terrible of contemporary art, Austria's Günter Brus, a survivor of Viennese Actionism, a radical post-war movement fed by Nazi repression and the limits of the bearable. Born in a small village in eastern Styria, the performer worked in Vienna in the 1960s with the late Otto Mühl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. Using his body as material, and wanting to extend the realm of painting in one of his very first actions, he crossed Vienna entirely covered in white paint and cut in half by a black line, before being arrested by the police. "From an Austrian point of view, Günter Brus is certainly one of the few who have this outstanding international significance. It is no longer possible to imagine art history without him" says Roman Grabner, Günter Brus specialist. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
