Israeli soldiers patrol the Kibbutz of Kfar Aza, near the Gaza border, where about 100 people were killed in last Saturday's Hamas attack. The bodies of Hamas gunmen still litter the ground in the midst of burnt houses and vehicles. "They burnt whole families together" says Roni Kaplan, a Major in the IDF's spokesperson unit. The kibbutz was one of those targeted by the surprise Hamas assault, in which more than 1,400 people were killed, most of them civilians. Responding to the attack, the worst in the country's 75-year history, Israel has been bombarding targets in the Gaza Strip, where at least 2,670 people have been killed and one million displaced.
