Description
The mayor of Tibu governs more than 115 kilometers from his Colombian municipality, scared off by death threats from FARC dissidents. He left behind a "no man's land" that is currently hosting peace negotiations between the government and his aggressors. FARC dissidents stopped Nelson Leal on a road and intimidated him while he was with his wife, 13-year-old son and niece. It was "scary," Leal recalls.
Since October 8, he has returned with bodyguards to his town for the first talks with FARC dissidents who had rejected the guerrilla group's 2016 peace pact, with a view to demobilizing some 3,500 fighters and putting an end, once and for all, to their armed insurgency. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
