Description
An explosion on Saturday in an ArcelorMittal coal mine in Kazakhstan cost the lives of 42 miners, the worst mining accident in the history of the Central Asian country, which is today observing a day of mourning. In Karaganda, where the blast occurred, grieving residents pay their respects to the victims at the various monuments to deceased miners, and express little hope for reform. "You have to invest money and the investor, first and foremost, wants to make a profit," Alexey Svistunov, 48, tells AFP. "That's why we have deaths, gas leaks and everything else. The problem won't be solved." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
