Description
Gilbues, in the northeastern state of Piaui, is Brazil's worst desertification hotspot. The landscape of rugged red craters looks like something from Mars, the rain is rare and the land is fast turning to desert. Experts say the process is caused by rampant erosion of the region's naturally fragile soil, and is being exacerbated by deforestation, reckless development and likely climate change. But some farmers fight to hang on and to keep their cows and themselves alive. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
