Description
Heavy rains and flooding have submerged the island of Apipe Chico and much of the province of Corrientes in northern Argentina. The island of Apipe Chico, on the Parana River, is 4 kilometers downstream from the Yacyreta dam, which opened its gates last week after heavy rains in Brazil caused water to flow downstream. Officials blame the extreme weather on the El Nino phenomenon, which is typically associated with warming ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
