Many buildings in Kherson, southern Ukraine, are still adorned with the blue and yellow ribbons that came to symbolise the city's peaceful resistance during eight months of Russian occupation, a period that ended on November 11, 2022. A year on from liberation, the city is still under fire, its last remaining residents living surrounded by shattered windows and debris. "This was a shell hitting 50 metres away from us" says Borys, a 70-year-old market administrator showing the damage done to the shops he oversees, "all the windows are broken."
