Description
On 11 November 1943, Vincent Malerba took part in the Armistice Day celebrations with hundreds of Grenoble citizens, in defiance of all prohibitions. During this celebration, he was arrested and deported to the Buchenwald-Dora camp in Germany with almost 400 other people. For several months, he worked in inhumane conditions and suffered abuse at the hands of Nazi soldiers. Nearly one in four deportees died in this tragedy, and Vincent Malerba is the only survivor still alive. Now 98, he finds it difficult to recount his painful memories of the deportation, but his number, 40250, pronounced in German, remains intact. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
