Description
The glass deposit, which disappeared in the early 1980s in favour of recycling, is making a comeback. France's largest glass container washing plant has opened in Carquefou, near Nantes, western France, with the ambition of processing 60 million bottles and jars a year. "These containers can be reused up to 50 times. This saves 79% in energy and 77% in CO2 emissions, and what's more, we use half as much water washing the bottles as we do recycling them," explains the plant's founder, Celie Couche. The company has around 200 collection points in the region, mainly in supermarkets. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
