Description
They are jumping out of helicopters or climbing up buildings, whenever regular firefighters can't get through, special unit GRIMP takes over.
From drunken tourists lost in the Eiffel Tower to injured visitors in the Catacombs, the work carried out by GRIMP firefighters in the Paris sometimes has a taste of the unusual, often, of adrenaline. When it comes to rescue at great heights, "there's no room for error", sums up Staff Sergeant Kevin.
Out of the 8,600 firefighters of the Paris brigade, only 18 make up the GRIMP ( Intervention and Reconnaissance in Dangerous Environments unit), with an average age of 28. A component of the urban search and rescue department, the unit steps in to support first aid when access is too difficult or dangerous because of the height or depth. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
