Description
"We can't prepare or educate a person in an environment that doesn't resemble what we have outside prison" says Ana Suarez, integration advisor for the Erguete Foundation, speaking at Teixeiro prison, a facility in northwest Spain -- and only of only a few in Europe -- where male and female inmates share their quarters. The aim is to promote cohabitation between men and women with in order to make their rehabilitation easier. "Why should prisons be the only place where there is no gender mix?" asks Ambra, one of Teixeiro's female inmates, as she heads off to play football with the men. Spain has, for over two decades, experimented with mixed-gender prisons and currently has 20 coed cell blocks across the country, where 202 women and 925 men take part in joint activities.
