Description
Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Regional Director Paul Brockmann speaks about Rohingya fleeing Myanmar and Bangladesh aboard rickety boats, at a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. MSF had pleaded with Indonesia and Malaysia -- two Southeast Asian states favoured as destinations -- to give the Rohingya safe refuge.
"Safe distance disembarkation is a simple thing that both Indonesia and Malaysia can do. And they shouldn't have to shoulder this burden alone. Governments around the world do need to step up," says Brockmann.
More than 1,000 Rohingya refugees landed in Aceh last month, the biggest wave of arrivals in Indonesia since 2015, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
