Description
The US government is investing billions of dollars to enact upgrades of "transformational" magnitude to passenger rail in a country with long-standing devotion to the automobile, says Laura Mason, a top official with national rail operator Amtrak. At Baltimore Penn Station, in the state of Maryland, construction crews fan out on a train platform to perform repairs and modernize equipment as part of an upgrade funded by federal dollars. Funding from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the US railway system "is an opportunity to really reinvest and modernize for a new era of passenger rail," Mason says.
