Far from its glamorous image, Los Angeles has become the homeless capital of the United States, ahead of New York. More than 75,000 people sleep on the sidewalks of Hollywood, Skid Row or the beaches of Venice: 70% more than in 2015. A crisis fueled by the rising cost of real estate. The city's Democratic mayor, Karen Bass, has been dismantling camps by the dozen since her election a year ago, but the end of the moratorium on evictions imposed during the pandemic is leading the fear of an influx of new homeless in the coming months.
