Description
In Brazil, caimans are struggling to survive in trash and polluted waters in a lagoon of the megalopolis of Rio de Janeiro.
These reptiles live in the Jacarepagua lagoon, a vast group of districts to the west of the city whose name means "Valley of the Caimans" in the Indigenous Tupi-Guarani language.
For biologist Ricardo Freitas, the conclusion is unequivocal: the Jacarapagua caiman is "threatened with extinction," having been hit hard by urban expansion and the pollution that goes with it. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
