Description
The chapel of King's College Cambridge is having more than 400 solar panels installed on its roof to help the institution cut down its carbon output and power its world-famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service with green energy. While the panels won't be operational in time for this year's internationally-broadcast service, when they are connected early in 2024 they will produce around five percent of the college's power output, which is more than enough to cover the requirements of the chapel itself. The move has not been without controversy, with heritage body Historic England objecting to the installation of the panels, saying they will "introduce a very discordant element" to the chapel's appearance.
