Description
Still living surrounded by debris and the husks of destroyed buildings, residents in the Ukrainian city of Izyum, eastern Kharkiv region, share their plans and hopes for 2024, over a year after the end of Russian occupation. One resident, Volodymyr, believes that "everyone shares one hope for 2024 - that we quickly achieve victory and the war comes to an end". According to the deputy of the city council, the number of city residents has increased by 7,000 over the course of the year. "It's became a bit livelier" says Anastasiia, a local resident out for a walk with her child. Izyum was recaptured by Ukrainian forces in September 2022, after a six-month occupation, during which most of the city's infrastructure was destroyed and almost two thirds of the population left.
