Description
As part of the annual Great Feast festivities, "Parachicos" masked dancers parade through the streets of Chiapas in southern Mexico as part of a communal offering to Saint Anthony Abbot, Our Lord of Esquipulas and Saint Sebastian. The dancers carry statues of the saints to various places of worship in the town of Chiapa de Corzo, a tradition proclaimed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010. The tradition finds its roots in a hybrid of both Spanish Catholic and local Indigenous cultures. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
