In Gondar, the main town in Ethiopia's Amhara region, the celebrations of Timkat, an Orthodox festival, were less joyful and colourful than usual this year. "I've been celebrating Timkat for years, but today the number of participants has significantly decreased," says one participant. For several months, the Amhara region has been the scene of armed conflict between the Ethiopian Defense Forces and the ethnic Amhara militia known as 'Fano' after Addis Ababa announced in April 2023 that it was dismantling regional forces across Ethiopia.
