Description
Scarecrows stand outside the UK's Houses of Parliament as fruit and vegetable farmers protest against what they say is "unfair" treatment at the hands of the country's six largest supermarket chains. A total of 49 scarecrows represent 49 percent of British farmers who say they are on the brink of leaving the industry. "It is really up to our politicians to accept responsibility" says Guy Singh-Watson, a farmer and organiser of the demonstration. Supermarkets "don't care about British farming, they care about shareholders" he says. The protest coincides with a debate in parliament on a petition by the farmers to overhaul the grocery supply chain code of practice. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
