Description
The state of Alabama is planning to use an "untested, unproven method" to execute a convicted murderer with nitrogen gas and in doing so risks subjecting him to "a very painful and terrible death," says a capital punishment expert. "No one knows what's going to happen, including Alabama officials themselves" when they carry out the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith, says Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington. Alabama previously tried but failed to execute Smith by lethal injection in November 2022. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
