Kenyan medics take part in a protest march over pay and working conditions in the capital Nairobi amidst an ongoing nationwide doctors strike which is paralysing health services. At the centre of the row is a move by the government to slash the salaries of medical interns and delay employing them on permanent and pensionable terms. But the protesters say there are other issues too. "Hospitals are understaffed, interns are underpaid, they are overworked and we have been trying to bring this attention to the ministry of health for the longest time, but they haven't been listening," says Jane Merinyo, a medical intern at the protest.
