In the heart of the jungle in French Guiana, on the banks of the Approuague river, soldiers of the Harpie force look to stop illegal gold-mining. Near the river checkpoint, a roadblock set up in November 2022 has "stemmed all the flow". On the eve of an official visit by President Macron, and despite the considerable military resources deployed since 2008 as part of this €70 million-a-year operation, France has failed to eradicate this gold rush from neighboring Brazil and Suriname.
