Description
Huge crowds of Hindu devotees pack the streets of a southern Mumbai neighbourhood to celebrate the "Gudi Padwa" festival, which marks new year in the western state of Maharashtra.
Dressed in colourful traditional attire and headdresses, crowds marched down the streets of Girgaon, singing, drumming, and dancing to music alongside statues of Hindu deity Ganesha and 17th-century Indian ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
"Gudi" means the flag of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe according to Hindus, and "Padwa" means the first day of the lunar phase. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
