Description
Around eight thousand people have taken to the streets of Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, to protest a revived bill that would target NGOs and media who receive foreign funding by requring them to register as an "organisation pursuing the interests of a foreign power". The repressive bill resembles Russia's "foreign agent" law, and its initial introduction sparked mass demonstrations last year. The march comes in tandem with commemorations of the massacre of April 9 1989, when Soviet police massacred 21 protestors marching for Georgian independence and injured hundreds more. "If we have this law, we will no longer have opposition TV channels. We will have this one-man tyrannical and catastrophic regime and, of course, we will lose our EU candidate country status," says local student Elene Edilashvili. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
