Description
To mark the start of the campaign for Togo's legislative elections, opposition party activists took part in processions on motorbikes and in cars through the main streets of the capital, Lome. The campaigning for the legislative and regional elections, scheduled for April 29, got underway against a backdrop of high political tension, following constitutional reform that critics say is a bid by loyalists to keep President Faure Gnassingbe in power longer. "If this revision sees the light of day, Faure Gnassingbe will be in power forever, and that would be an insult to the Togolese people," says Georges Glovey, an activist for the opposition National Alliance for Change, or ANC.
