Description
On an overcast Saturday in Kyiv, a group of men walk into an art studio. Appearing sheepish at first in the brightly lit room, they soon settle in and start sculpting and chatting among themselves. Although only a few wear military uniforms, they are all Ukrainian soldiers. All of them are also suffering from psychological trauma related to the ongoing war with Russia. They are currently hospitalised as part of their treatment, and for some coming to this art therapy class, it is their only respite from the war. The programme, run by Ukrainian sculptor Oleksiy Pergamenshchyk, takes place each weekend and is voluntary. He believes this is part of his contribution to the war effort as an artist, and more importantly towards the wellbeing of the soldiers that fight for his freedom. "They come here depressed, they come out from here (after) two or three hours ... happy," says Perhamenshchyk. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
