Description
"There are no answers" says Ivelina Dimcheva, mayor of Beliv Bryag, a mining village in south-central Bulgaria where anger is growing over the EU's Green deal and its obligation to phase out fossil fuels. The Stara Zagora region is a coal production hub, with the Maritsa East mining complex alone employing more than 11,000 people and, according to experts, indirectly supporting a further 70,000 jobs. "The state did nothing for the retraining of workers who will lose their jobs" says Stefan Nikolov, a resident of Galobov and one of those accusing the Bulgarian government of failing to prepare the region for a life after coal.
