Description
A May Day pro-Palestinian march in the South African city of Cape Town, ends at a local stadium where President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the crowd, thanking workers for their contribution to the country and highlighting the cause of the Palestinians, as the conflict in Gaza continues. "Today as South Africa we have stood up, for the rights of those in other parts of the world are currently being subjected to torture, to violence, to genocide. And that is why as country, and yes as an alliance, we have stood firm in our support for the people of Palestine," he says. Gaza's deadliest war erupted with Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures. Palestinian militants also took some 250 hostages on October 7. Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 34,568 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
