At the start of his visit to New Caledonia on Thursday, Emmanuel Macron called for "constructive appeasement" as he vowed to restore calm to the French overseas territory. Macron ruled out going back on the results of three referendums held in New Caledonia which had rejected independence, saying "appeasement cannot mean denying a path that has already been taken."
