In New Caledonia, mobile gendarmes take cover behind their vehicles. They take aim at the wooded hillside overlooking the Paita road. The police forces have been tasked with clearing and securing this road, which leads to the international airport at La Tontouta and is closed until at least Sunday as a result of the deadly riots that have rocked the French Pacific territory for the past two weeks. Further north, activists stand guard at the La Pirogue pass, a key roadblock used to access the airport. "Morale is high and everyone is determined," says a pro-independence activist.
