As Major General Luis Emilio Cardozo Santamaria is sworn in as Colombia's new army chief, President Gustavo Petro is calling for a fight against corruption in the armed forces. In early May, Petro announced a shortage of weapons and ammunition from two military bases, which he said were being trafficked by Colombian forces to Haiti. Although no reason was given for the destitution of former army chief, it happened after coming under heavy criticism for deteriorating security and a scandal in which he allegedly put his wife's English teacher under surveillance out of jealousy.
