Bulgarian history teacher Tsvetomira Antonova tries to educate students about the dark side of the Communist era, amidst concerns that Bulgarian textbooks portray an idealised Russia and gloss over some negative aspects. In the run-up to Bulgaria's parliamentary election and the European elections both on 9 June, Eurosceptic and pro-Kremlin parties have ramped up efforts to win over young Bulgarians, who have limited knowledge about the past. “This is our battlefield and our battle that we fight every day - the battle for the truth and the battle to protect children from these tentacles of propaganda that reach at them from everywhere,” says Antonova.
