Description
As organizer of COP16, scheduled for October 2024 in Cali, Colombia will work towards formal recognition of Afrodescendants in Latin America, announces Colombian vice-president Francia Marquez at a press conference. "We found that the Afro-descendant population", unlike indigenous communities, "is not included in any of the international instruments on the environment, climate change and diversity", says Marquez. "That's why we've made it our mission, together with the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to obtain, to promote the inclusion of the category of people of Afro-descendant peoples in the agreement on biological diversity," she adds. COP16, the major United Nations conference on biodiversity, will be held from October 21st to November 1st in Cali (south-west), Colombia's third-largest city, where some 12,000 people are expected to attend.
