In a sun-soaked cemetery in Sulaimaniyah in the autonomous Kurdistan region, silence lingers over a forsaken corner devoid of mourners where women killed in gender-based violence lay in unmarked graves. Domestic violence and femicide have long plagued Iraq's conservative society, including through so-called "honour killings" -- the murders of women deemed to have breached patriarchal social norms. "I've tried so hard over the years to put an end to the burial of people [victims of gender-based violence] with only a number [code], without a name or address.. no one.. deserves to be buried without a name and address," says an Iraqi activist.
