Description
Panamanian union leaders urge President Jose Raul Mulino to implement an economic recovery program for the thousands of workers who were "abandoned" following the closure of a Canadian-owned mine. The open-pit mine Cobre Panama, located on the Caribbean coast, ceased operations after Panama's Supreme Court declared the concession contract "unconstitutional" on November 28, 2023, following five weeks of protests that partially paralyzed the country. These protests were organized by environmental groups accusing the mine of causing environmental damage. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
