Description
Residents of a neighborhood in El Salvador once notorious for gang violence walk their streets past murals symbolizing peace with a security they could only dream of in the past. "It's all been a total change, a new dawn," says resident Edy Guerrero, "that's the best thing, freedom."
La Campanera, about 10 km (six miles) northeast of San Salvador, was subjected to the Barrio 18 gang for more than two decades, but regained control with President Nayib Bukele's "war" on gangs, which allows warrantless arrests - a measure that has been criticized by human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
