Description
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says that the return of a sacred cloak that had been in a European museum for more than 300 years marks the beginning of a "new history" for the country's Indigenous peoples. "The return of the sacred Tupinamba mantle, which was part of the collection of the National Museum of Denmark, marks the beginning of a new history of conquest of the indigenous peoples," says the president in a public act in the Quinta da Boa Vista park, in Rio de Janeiro.
The return of the ceremonial cloak is part of a diplomatic effort by the Brazilian government to recover other Indigenous objects from museums in France, Japan and elsewhere. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES [TO COMPLETE 36FY3ZV_EN]
