Description
In a statement broadcast on the 203rd anniversary of El Salvador's independence from Spain, President Nayib Bukele assures that the gangs are being "dismantled," but that the offensive against them will continue until they are eradicated.
In March 2022, after an escalation of 87 homicides in one weekend, Bukele established a state of emergency to support a crackdown, allowing arrests without a warrant, with 82,000 alleged gang members captured to date. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES [TO COMPLETE 36GB6ZC_EN]
