Description
Walking between rows of vines in the evening light, Turkish wine maker Zeynep Arca Salliel pinches a grape and tastes its skin - it's time to harvest. "Wine is an incredible product for Turkey," she says, "because we are one of the oldest terroirs in the world". Salliel came to wine more than 20 years ago after a state monopoly on alcohol sales, one that favoured large producers, was lifted. Now, Turkey boasts some 250 estates, with half focusing on quality wines. While the sector has come a long way, producers have difficulty selling domestically and exporting and have pointed to taxes, bureaucracy and certain laws as the main culprits. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
