Description
"I've known what a gun is and what a bullet is since I was a little boy," 27-year-old Franklin Mina told AFP about growing up in Buenaventura. Mina is one of nearly 3,000 young Colombians who receive a monthly government stipend to keep them from joining the world of crime.
The "Youth in Peace", a program of Colombia's leftist president Gustavo Petro, pays young people between the ages of 14 and 28 who live in poverty and are at high risk of being recruited by gangs. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
