Description
Sebastien Daire, owner of eight Carrefour Market franchises in Martinique, saw two of them burnt down last week, during a new wave of riots over spiralling food prices on the French Caribbean island. In recent weeks, supermarkets and hypermarkets have been among the favourite targets in the social unrest: food on the island costs 40% more than in mainland France, but Daire says, while the high cost of living is "a real issue", supermarkets such as his are being "scapegoated".
