Description
Flooding is not uncommon around Lokoja in northern Nigeria's Kogi state, where Africa's third longest river meets its main tributary, the Benue, but climate change has thrown regular weather patterns into turmoil, worsening the effects in recent years. For many living in the area, moving is often not an option. “There's no money to build another house,” says one flood victim. “If I have the ways to relocate to another place, I will not live here to suffer every year.” Torrential rains and severe flooding have affected around 6.9 million people in West and Central Africa so far in 2024, according to UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
