Description
In Hawidela, a village about an hour outside Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region, beekeeper Amanuel Hiluf is once again tending to his hives. For 20 years this northernmost region of Ethiopia produced a highly prized creamy white honey. That is until the devastating two-year war between federal government troops and Tigrayan rebels in 2020, which forced Hiluf to flee with his family. Now he’s back tending to his beloved bees, but despite a peace deal signed in 2022, the impact of the conflict is still evident. "Because of deforestation during the war the bees’ production has reduced,” he says.” If trees are cut down and there are no flowers the production will eventually decrease.” IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
