Germany is heading for snap elections to be held on February 23 after an agreement between the main parties, aiming to form a stable government after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition collapsed last week. The leader of the German conservative party CDU, Friedrich Merz, says that the agreed election date is "acceptable", but he would have preferred the ballot to have taken place "earlier".
