As anger grows across the country over agricultural reforms, a farmers' union in the southern French Pyrenees hopes to fight agribusiness, which it sees as a threat to farmers. Laurence Marandola, the first woman to serve as the union's sole spokeswoman, is mobilizing rural farmers to fight free trade agreements between the European Union and Mercosur countries. Marandola hopes to "promote a rural model of agriculture" that will relieve the "mostly silent farmers" who, she says, are waiting for public or political authorities to take them into account.
